Weekend Outlook: Friday Is the Day to Drive I-70

Quick summary: The storm that had this weekend circled has backed off at the passes. Friday is the one clean, sunny travel day. Saturday through Monday turns cold and unsettled, with snow showers likely at times, mainly Saturday night and Sunday night, but the current forecast keeps the amounts light and no winter weather advisories are posted. If you can pick your drive, pick Friday.

Friday is the window

Denver gets sunshine and 78 degrees on Friday. The passes get the same sun once a slight chance of morning snow showers clears out, with highs in the mid to upper 40s around the Eisenhower Tunnel and Vail Pass. The catch is wind, with gusts to 30 mph up high. High profile vehicles will feel it. Everyone else gets a bright, cold, easy drive.

Friday night goes mostly clear and properly cold, down into the 20s and low 30s at pass level. If you are heading up after work, that is still the best drive of the weekend. It just ends in a much colder place than it starts.

Saturday and Sunday turn unsettled

A colder pattern settles in behind Friday. Saturday brings a chance of snow showers at the passes, around 40 percent, with highs only in the upper 30s to mid 40s and gusts back over 30 mph. Saturday night is the snowiest window of the weekend in the current forecast, with snow showers likely, at 60 to 70 percent. Sunday keeps a chance of snow showers all day and again on Sunday night, and Monday looks about the same.

The amounts are the real story, or the lack of them. Every stretch of the current National Weather Service forecast for the passes calls for less than half an inch of new snow. Earlier this week this system looked snowier, and it has trended warmer and lighter since. Half an inch can still slick up the road in a hurry at 11,000 feet, especially after dark, so this is not an all clear. It is just not the storm it was supposed to be.

One honest disagreement to know about: OpenSnow's most recent Colorado update, from Wednesday, still leans snowier and expects at least a few inches across most mountains Saturday through Monday. The official point forecasts for the passes are the lighter take. Plan for the middle of those two and you will be ready either way.

The drive home, and the Denver gap

Sunday is not the guaranteed clear day it sometimes is after a storm, and waiting until Monday buys you nothing this time, since Monday carries the same snow shower chances. If your schedule bends, drive home in Sunday daylight rather than Sunday night.

And pack for the top of the drive, not the bottom. Saturday afternoon in Denver is 57 degrees and partly sunny. The same afternoon at the tunnel is around 37 with snow showers possible. That is a 20 degree swing and a different season, 60 miles apart.

The traction law season is already running on this corridor, September 1 through May 31 from Morrison to Dotsero, and nights this cold are exactly when it gets switched on. The winter kit belongs in the car now. A full traction law checklist post lands here on Tuesday.
