First Snow Recap and a Clear Weekend Drive on I-70

Quick version: The first major snow of the season is in the books. Resort reports say it came in light at most I-70 resorts, official pass totals are still not published, and the weekend drive is the easy part. Sun on both sides of the Divide, no new snow in the forecast, and no traction law in effect as of Friday afternoon.

What the storm actually left

First, the honest part. As of Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service still has not published official snowfall totals for Eisenhower Tunnel or Vail Pass. We are not going to guess at pass numbers or recycle the forecast as if it were the result.

What we do have are resort reports. SNOWBOARDER compiled them Thursday, partway through the storm, from the resorts' own reports. Read them as exactly that: resort numbers partway in, not final storm totals, and not pass totals.

Along the I-70 corridor: Loveland reported 7 inches, the most on the corridor, fitting for the ski area sitting right at the Continental Divide by the tunnel. Arapahoe Basin, Keystone and Winter Park each reported 2 inches. Around the state in the same roundup: Steamboat and Aspen Snowmass reported 2 inches each, and the San Juans did best of all, with Silverton and Telluride at 10 inches each. Vail was not in the roundup, so we have no resort number to give you for Vail yet.

Score it against Tuesday's forecast of roughly 6 to 10 inches possible at pass level. Most corridor resorts came in under that. The storm was real, it just spent more of itself down south and on the highest ground. Denver got cold rain and no snow, exactly the split the forecast promised.

The road right now

We checked COtrip on Friday afternoon, around 3:15 p.m. mountain time. Between Denver and Vail there are no closures in either direction. The passenger vehicle traction law is not in effect. The commercial vehicle chain law is not in effect.

Driving this evening, know this: lane and shoulder closures for roadwork are active around Floyd Hill in both directions into Friday evening, including an eastbound lane closure for emergency bridge deck repair, and shoulder closures near Frisco and Silverthorne run until about 7 p.m. Expect the Floyd Hill work zone to be slow while it lasts.

One heads up for next week: COtrip lists scheduled overnight closures of westbound I-70 near Floyd Hill on Monday and Tuesday nights, October 19 and 20, from 9 p.m. to about 5 a.m. for construction, with traffic detoured onto the US 6 ramps. If you drive late those nights, plan for it. And as always, check COtrip right before you leave. Status changes fast out there.

The weekend drive

The National Weather Service forecast, refreshed Friday, is dry and sunny across the corridor all weekend.

Saturday: sunny at the tunnel, high near 45. Sunny in Denver, high near 76. Sunday: mostly sunny at the tunnel, high near 44. Sunny in Denver, high near 74. No new snow is forecast at pass level Friday through Sunday.

That is more than a 30 degree split between the city and the tunnel on Saturday, so dress for where you are going, not where you are leaving. Friday night still drops to near 27 at the tunnel, so early Saturday drivers should watch bridges and shaded spots for leftover ice before the sun gets on them.

With weather out of the way, volume is the only fight this weekend. Leave early Saturday, start back early Sunday, and you get one of the easiest October drives this corridor offers. One look ahead: Monday afternoon brings a 40 percent chance of snow showers at the passes, worth watching if your weekend stretches to Monday.

That is winter's first rep in the books. Light at most resorts, honest numbers still pending at the passes, and a clean weekend to drive it.

New I-70 Things gear is coming this fall. Join the email list at i70things.com and you will hear about the drop first, plus weekend outlooks like this one all winter.

Stay safe out there.
